THE SULLIVAN

The Sullivan is a sportsmanship award that recognizes an individual who displayed excellent sportsmanship and demonstrated kind, caring and selfless acts during the award year.

The award is named after Sean “Sully” Sullivan. During one competition season, Sullivan and another competitor had been entered in a number of shows. The other competitor was longing for an overall victory but had been denied on more than one occasion due to placing behind Sullivan. At a later event, Sullivan sized up the competition and felt either he or the fellow competitor would probably win the show. In a truly selfless act he faked an injury and withdrew from the contest to make sure it wasn’t he who again denied the other competitor an overall victory -- which he did claim at that event and was able to savor the sweetness of an overall championship. This is one example among many of Sullivan giving selflessly of himself out of genuine care for others. His many acts of generosity, kindness and thoughtfulness, in addition to his continued display of honest sportsmanship spanning more than two and a half decades, are why this award is named after him.

Eligibility
Individuals associated with the OCB in any capacity (Examples: Judging, promoting, competing, assisting at shows, etc.) during the award year are eligible for the Sullivan award.

OCB AWARDS BOARD

The OCB Awards Board (referred to as the “Board” from this point forward) consists of five persons. One of these individuals is designated as Chairperson. The work of the Board will be conducted primarily by e-mail.

Chairperson
The Board’s members will elect the Chairperson for the Board. Re-elections will take place on an annual basis in May.

PROCEDURES FOR SELECTION OF RECIPIENTS

Screening of Nominations
Every nomination received will be reviewed by the Board to determine whether the nominee meets the criteria for which they were nominated. Every nominee receiving three or more favorable votes from the Board will be included among the candidates voted upon that year.

Balloting
Balloting will be conducted among the members of the Board each year to determine recipients for each OCB award category. Each member of the Board will cast up to eight votes for candidates who were nominated, and who received three or more favorable votes from the Board upon nomination, and rank those individuals in order of preference ("1" being their first choice). Ranking by committee members shall be used only to break ties. To achieve consistency in style and format, the materials submitted in support of each nomination can be edited prior to the voting by a person designated by the Chairperson. Additional materials, if needed, may be solicited from the nominator or from other sources. Any Board member who believes that important and relevant information is missing from the curriculum vitae of a nominee distributed with the ballot may submit that information to the Chairperson for consideration for inclusion in subsequent balloting cycles.

Alternate Board Member
An individual designated as an alternate Board member will take the place of a regular Board member for balloting in cases where a conflict of interest exists (a nominee is trained by a regular Board member, is a relative of a Board member, is one of the Board members, etc.)

Reporting Results
Names receiving the most votes from the Board will become award recipients.

Proceedings Confidential
The names of persons who are nominated but who are not selected, shall not be disclosed at any time to any person (including those who are nominated) other than members of the Board.

No member of the Board shall disclose to any person how any member of the Board voted on the election of any particular candidate, including particulars of balloting.

After the Board has completed all balloting for the names of successful candidates, the Chairman or some other person designated by the Board for the purpose shall then release to the public the names of those elected.
